As I kept talking to Deepika, I could feel that my heart was divided into two pieces. One that wanted to be with Deepika and one that wanted to stay away. For the sake of comfort let’s name the first part as HARI. Generally, I never had to confront any of these faces of my heart but one day I had to. It was in November 2010.
I after banging his head in the library till midnight went to the canteen to have some sandwiches. It was the first week of November and the majors were approaching fast. So, there were a lot of students at the canteen. Seeing, this I decided to call Deepika.
Now, friends as we all know I never had a girlfriend and he did not know how to get one. He did know any of the tricks, but he desperately wanted to be Deepika by his side. So, he asked her only, “Deepika, Suppose if I wanted to get a girl, what should I do? What is the MOST BASIC METHOD?”
Deepika, who did know about my plans (or maybe she was playing sly) said “GIVE HER GIFTS.”
“Why? Why do you think so that by giving gifts one can get a girl?”
“When you are in a relationship, you have to give gifts to sustain it.”
“I am not in a relationship with someone; I want to be in one. Give me suggestions for that.”
“Gifts are always the way, because girls like it. Okay, I got to go now, have to get up early.” And she disconnected.
Hari, then came back to the hostel and thronged my room’s gate open and said “I have something to talk about.”
“Okay, take a seat or let’s go to the terrace; nobody will be there to disturb us.”
“Okay” was what he said and then we went to the terrace and he told me the whole incident.
“It is 10 degree Celsius and you have this to say. Dude, grab a gift and give it to her.”
“I was thinking whether I should I tell my parents about it or not.”
“There, are two ways. First, tell your parents about it because it’s their money and you are not earning. The second way is to cut your dispensable expenses, like you eat a burger and a sandwich just before going to sleep. I would definitely suggest the second one, it is much easier. You will get in a better shape as well.”
“Can, you lend me some money? I am short on cash as the students whom I lend the money, used that to give GIFTS TO THEIR GIRLS. Now, they are trying to cut their expenses and pay their debts back.”
“I don’t have any money for these kinds of menial things. There, are some girls whom I have given gifts to impress them and while doing so I felt like I was bribing the girl to be with me. They did not have any respect for the emotions attached with that thing wrapped and given to them. It would have been better if these girls would have kept an open auction and the highest bidder would get to be in a relationship with the girl.”
“But, Deepika is not like that.”
“I can’t say anything about it. I have not met her yet. But if she is asking for a gift in such a manner then, who knows may be an auction is a better option in her case. So, I will suggest you to forget her and if you still want to try and have a go, then go to Delhi on her birthday, talk to your parents about it, suit up pick a gift from Archie’s and give it to her.”
“Why, is it necessary to tell my parents about it? Nobody, does it.”
“Because, your relationship should not be based on gifts given using money taken from your parents’ accounts without their knowledge. Just, keep your slate keep. That’s it. In this way you will never have to deal with your parents’ wrath because you will never be wrong.”
And then I went to my room. I had a CGPA to maintain as well and for that I could not be standing on the terrace exposing myself to cold waves.
Though Hari was nothing but part of my heart that liked Deepika, I wanted to get control over him. After all, he was nothing but part of my conscious. I tried not to think of Deepika, because whenever I would Hari would resurface asking me to call her or SMS her and the other part of my heart knew this was not right and I certainly favoured this part of my heart.
But, Hari would keep resurfacing in my day to day life. And, finally I decided to solve this Gift Mystery. I mean how can be they important in our life. How can anyone dare to ask for a gift without achieving anything? How can one spoil a small kid by giving gifts to him many a times he and he might take them for granted? And so, he might grow up expecting more and more of such free GIFTS AND LUXURIES in his life. And this is how SPOILT BRATS are made. Why is it that a girl should get a gift from a boy who cares for her but does not know what’s on the other side? I concluded that GIFTS ARE NOTHING BUT A WASTE OF MONEY.
Weeks passed but this question still appealed to me again and again. So, I started to ask my best friends about it. Someone even said that “Khushi ki koi kimat nhi Hoti” and I laughed out loud on such a thing. But I decided to buy Deepika a gift. So, the next day, which was also incidentally Deepika’s birthday I did what I do best.
I took a big gift from Archie’s, wrote some self-composed things on it and left for her home. But I did not give her the gift straight away, I planned to hide it just outside the gate of her house. And I went inside, gave her a smile, so I could notice her reaction. And what I noticed was something I did not expect even in my dreams. She was ALREADY COMMITTED. So, I left the party early, saddened by the fact that I can’t get her and Hari had to die now. I picked up the gift from outside the house went to a park near her house. I sat there for some time, and then I noticed the ugly reality of India as a nation. I saw some hungry and poor children sleeping on a bench near the one I was sitting. I opened up the gift took out the cookies and candies I had bought for Deepika and gave them to those homeless children and they took those and went to their other siblings scattered all over the park. It somehow gave me a sense of relief and relaxed me. I looked at the empty box and thought my friend was right when she said “KHUSHI KI KOI KIMAT NAHI HOTI.”
ALSO, MAY BE DEEPIKA WOULD HAVE DONE A LOT OF GOOD DEEDS IN HER LAST LIFE, THAT THE COOKIES WHICH WERE MEANT TO ADD CALORIES TO HER BODY AND SPOIL HER FIGURE, WERE USED TO FEED SOME MALNOURISHED CHILDREN. 🙂
